DOMA’sses: A Rational Argument About DOMA

DOMA-avatarI’m sure most of you have seen this image trending Facebook as of late, and for those of you that live in caves, this is the new icon of the HRC (Human Rights Campaign) to spread awareness of what is taking place in the highest court in the land. This is the week SCOTUS rules DOMA and Proposition 8 either constitutional or unconstitutional. It seems both will be repealed if Justice Anthony Kennedy (Bless his moderate heart) meant what he said earlier about his reservations to upholding this law as constitutional. My lifeline to live news coverage has been limited to only news blogs and NPR as of late, so I can’t tell you what is happening this very moment, if anything significant at all.

So what does all of this mean? Back on a warm September day during the hot and sticky Clinton administration, he signed into law The Defense of Marriage Act. Signing DOMA is something former President Clinton regrets to this day, but he claims Democrats had to compromise to get important bills passed. It also didn’t hurt that the man had a presidential election to win and the LGBT community made up a very small percent of the democratic constituency. It was a very politically toxic subject throughout the 90’s, but in the last decade support for LBGT’s has seen rapid growth all across the nation.

Obviously people are thrilled that there may finally be an end to the discrimination, but there are many who warn of fire and brimstone. You would think such a tired argument would have died with the puritans, but here we are… 2013. Below are screen snippets of such people responding to CNN articles on Facebook, and I will explain why their argument is not only invalid, but entirely based on ignorance.

God made Adam, Eve and Steve. He also made Anthony, Rick, Thomas, John, Randy, Ruby, Cathy, Debbie…. And if the Bible is correct, our lineage can be traced back to a whole bunch of biblical incest.

Doris seems to be confused about what’s being debated right now. If it were about something as trivial as what to “call” marriage, I wouldn’t care. The word marriage, however, means everything when it comes to federal recognition for benefits heterosexual families currently have access to. You can call gay marriage oatmeal and I don’t care, so long as oatmeal receives the same federal benefits as marriage does. Also, refer to my comment about incest above for the Genesis remark.

And most of us who don’t believe in your God don’t necessarily care.

1 Peter 2:13 “Submit yourselves for the Lord’s sake to every human institution, whether to a king as the one in authority,”

And regardless of what the Bible says man’s law in this country follows the constitution. Laws made are constitutional until proven otherwise by the Supreme Court. We tried Biblical law in England, and it didn’t work out so well.

Probably extremely low, considering more and more of this country is losing its religion. It’s also part of the reason marriage equality will win out in the end. I can’t say that all Christians hate the idea of gay marriage; in fact, there are many who are for it. There are even churches who are now welcoming gay and lesbian people with open arms. After all, Jesus never shut out the prostitutes and undesirables from hearing his message, and Jesus never mentions gay marriage or homosexuality in general. He did have some harsh words on divorce though Matthew 19:3-12. Paul mentioned homosexuality a few times, but he also may have been a closeted homosexual himself.

Yeah, because gay people, some of the most educated and charismatic people in the world, have no idea about the mechanics of sex… gay or straight. Also I have to ask, how many straight parents actually teach their children about safe and responsible sex, and how many leave it to the schools? If abstinence talks worked, Mississippi wouldn’t be the teen pregnancy capital of the US (which happens to be related to being the poorest state in the union).

You conveniently left out Leviticus 19:27 (cutting hair and shaving), Leviticus 11:8 (BLT’s), Genesis 38:9-10 (Pulling out), Leviticus 19:28 (Tattoos and earrings), Leviticus 19:19 (Mixing things, like seed, cattle, oh yeah, and blended garments), 1 Timothy 2:9 (Jewelry… Which is kind of odd considering what Christians and non-believers alike choose to symbolize their union. God must have said that wedding rings are okay… somewhere. Maybe in a book locked in Vatican vaults?), Leviticus 11:10 (Shellfish!)… It’s so easy to find a verse condemning something YOU ALL do on a regular basis.

I’m going to sound racist here, but I don’t really care. I must have read about 50 different messages from black people condemning homosexuality, but only one or two of them knew how to form reasonably coherent sentences. Shawn here believes as they do in places like Uganda that homosexuality is… a spirit. A spirit that has received many! That certainly sounds gay to me, you may be onto something there! Look throughout creation… Oh yeah, that’s right, not everything God made is heterosexual. In fact, there are numerous animals that can not only change their gender , but also pretend to be of the opposite sex. Obviously not everything is Adam and Eve, plugs and sockets… which by the way has to be one of the weakest arguing points against marriage equality. Do you even know how gay men have sex? Let’s just say the plumbing works, and the parts fit… very well. “Hum…. something to actually think about.”

72% of black children are brought into this world from unwed mothers. If my parents were homosexual, I’d be happy to have two. By the way, there are more gays of faith than there are atheists. Which leads me to…

I find it insulting that the black community would dare come out against marriage equality when they barely practice it before having children. And now that you got yours, you have the gall to tout the democratic process… the same democratic process that kept your ancestors in chains over 150 years ago. We don’t live in a democracy, sir. We live in a Republic, and despite what you may believe about democrats and republicans, the republic in republican means something, or at least it used to. It is specifically designed to include minorities instead of having the majority walk all over them. So, in a way it WAS thought of when they were drafting the constitution.

The institution of marriage may be 4,000 years old, but the way we marry nowadays is far different. For example, you and your wife probably chose to marry each other. In Biblical times women and sometimes men did not get a say in who they married (especially if they raped their spouse before being married). Also, the Catholic church has been around for about 2,000 years, but that probably didn’t stop you or others from going protestant. If you were to adhere to ancient traditions, you would be Catholic. Just because something has been around a long time doesn’t mean it stays the same.

You’re black, I can see that clearly. I look in the mirror and I’m white. We were both born that way, but we cannot see anything beyond flesh unless we’ve shared the same mind, experiences and attractions. This is what makes an argument against something you don’t understand so pointless. You think being gay is a choice because you most likely are not gay. If you have never been attracted to the same sex, how the hell can you proclaim a lifestyle CHOICE was involved? Just like how can I claim that black people have it easy freeloading off of the government today? I’m not black, and I don’t know what it’s like to be treated differently based on my race, but I do know what it’s like to be treated differently based on my sexuality, which makes me a little more empathetic toward racial minorities. That’s something you won’t ever have, unless someone close to you turns out to be gay.  It’s perception that needs to change, and clinging to ancient values aren’t going to bring you any closer to enlightenment.

So I’ll give you the same advice, “Stop it, you look and sound stupid.”

You’re counting one state, or the 53% of Americans that approve same-sex marriage? Either way, civil liberties and equality should not be put to a popular vote. I thought black people learned that lesson already?

Those selfish minorities! They want all the perks, like not being charged a heafty death tax when a spouse dies, being able to receive pensions or social security benefits when a spouse dies, you know… stuff that married couples are guaranteed under federal law? Quit being so selfish by expecting equal treatment under federal law! Oh but keep on paying those taxes.

I posted this because of the absurdity. This person is from Nigeria. Yes the same Nigeria with the corrupt government and sharia law in the north. Considering most African countries are 2nd and third world, you don’t know how unlucky you are to live in a place of rolling blackouts, failing infrastructure, uncontrolled governmental theft, increasing HIV/AIDS epidemic and Islamic extremists. Yeah, you can keep all that, because if Nigeria is a country in which God worked wonders, I certainly don’t want that crap over here. Enjoy your dismal future as Nigeria becomes more industrialized. God bless!

Ah! I was waiting for one of these “dog on man on boy on tree” type arguments. I’m going to explain once and for all why this argument is by far the most idiotic:

Pedophiles and rapists have victims they violated. They basically took rights away from their victims, and if this were biblical times they’d be married, but I digress. This does not equal two consenting adults getting married. A dog or cat, or newt or piece of pie is not sentient and cannot reason, nor can they sign legal documents declaring their unity to a man or woman. This also does not equal two consenting adults getting married. I should also mention that America has just as many deviants as Canada, Finland, The Netherlands, Iceland, Norway, Portugal, Sweden… in all countries where same-sex marriage is legal. I have yet to see any of those countries descend into chaos because of marriage equality.

I didn’t choose this one because it’s a model for the written word, but because of its contradictions. Biblically, gay marriage wasn’t even thought about, and Paul… oh poor flaming Paul was never married and he was about as anti-woman as they come. All that repressed sexual tension needs to be let out in some form or another. Why do you think DOMA exists at all? And what caused Sodom and Gomorrah’s destruction? Well if the two cities did exist, probably war, Earthquake, volcanic eruption, or meteor strike? Or if we go by the word of God, it wasn’t because everyone was gay… it was because the city was evil. The people did not respect or love one another (sounds kind of like the CNN Facebook page), there were rapists and criminals all over the place, no one offered anyone any hospitality and the people were hedonistic. The story of Sodom and Gomorrah symbolized a need for common courtesy and stability, values and empathy.

That’s kind of different than what we are proposing, quite the opposite really. If gay men are allowed to marry and settle down, that will kind of put some restraints on the sleeping around, especially if they have families. That’s what marriage is really about, solidifying the unity of two individuals, giving them a foundation and security to start a family. We live in an age where children need parents, and well, you don’t necessarily need intercourse to have a child of your own in this day and age.

Best to have society liberally educated rather than conservatively, which is why liberals tend to spend more on it while conservatives cut it. In any case, this response was a mess from the get-go. Somehow we went from a slippery slope to a full-blown cliff. Gay marriage somehow leads to communism and genocide. You do realize that during the Holocaust, gays were either disposed of or castrated. Oh good old eugenics! I doubt you’ve ever read anything on Marxism, let alone a book that didn’t have big words and illustrations. Socialism is not communism, and gay marriage will not lead to the US electing a Chinese communist dictator.

Educated idiots is about as contradictory as the book you have read to you every Sunday by your pastor, because you probably can’t be bothered to read it yourself. And considering you’re fed up with drivel that is not true, maybe you should skip the Sunday sermon.

Translation: I hate you, I don’t want to know anything about you… GOD BLESS! There’s nothing like hearing the message of Jesus from the people that have no idea that Jesus didn’t go around hating people, and hopefully he was better spoken than you. It’s sort of like how Christians are complaining that people are turning from God, but turn around and say stuff like this to everyone else. It’s your lack of real Christian behavior that’s the real reason behind people turning away from faith. The devil is not to blame, it’s Christians themselves.

There’s so much ignorance out there, it really hurts. It’s not like it hurts my heart or my feelings, it’s literally painful. It radiates from my head to my jaws to my neck and back to my head, because I grit my teeth and wonder how people can live in such a state cluelessness. How can you willfully shut down your brain so that you don’t learn anything more about the world and who you share it with? I know it sounds a bit like I’m close-minded with all the stereotypes I toss around every now and then for humor sake, but I know a lot about the world. I know more than the average person does about our government, our country, current events that actually matter. However, we live in a time where people just can’t be bothered to stop and try to understand what they hate. People are angry, because they don’t know what they are angry about! What scares me is a good portion of the voting population prefers to live in a state of clouded ignorance. The less effort it takes to learn about something, the better.

This is dangerous folks! People are so scared of socialism and communist regimes, but they forget how they start. You need to have a majority of people stupid enough to allow it to take place. And our society, our country is ripe for the picking. Gay marriage isn’t going to destroy this country, willful ignorance will.
